Is there a way of making a gentle ping noise to flag direction mentions in chats?
I''ve found a sound settings in user preferences and know that it makes a noise there through the little test icon. But sending DMs and @ notifications to me doesn't make the sound happen. This with the desktop version runningunder ubuntu

ah I get it - it only works if application is minimised but that's not useful. Often the application is sitting behind one of my many intellij windows
Slack does the ping noise if you are not actually in the channel where the message is.

If notifications are enabled Space is supposed to notify you as soon as focus is moved out of the Space application even if the application is not minimized. Please pay attention to the fact that notification settings are set up per channel and if you want to be notified about every message in the channel instead of direct mentions then "All messages" should be selected:
